Video recorded in Nonthaburi, Thailand, shows a mysterious explosion in the sky as motorists drive down a busy roadway.

Thailand’s Astronomical Society identified the flash as an extremely bright meteor called a “bolide,” according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Speculation surrounding the strange fireball included a downed aircraft, a shooting star, an alien invasion and an asteroid apocalypse.

The airborne explosion appeared around 8:40 a.m. on Monday, according to The Bangkok Post. The footage shows a small bright light streak across the sky for about two seconds before it explodes in a flash. The Bangkok Post reported that many people in different locations said they saw the fireball.

Initial accounts noted that there were no reports of fallen aircraft or objects hitting the ground in Nonthaburi, a suburb of Bangkok.

Between 1994 and 2013, “U.S. Government assets recorded at least 556 bolide events of various energies,” according to NASA.
