A terrifying video has captured the moment a mystery object collides with Jupiter in space – causing a blinding flash of light.

And it’s raised concerns that Earth could be next.

The video was captured by amateur astronomer John McKeon on March 17.

It is thought that the object was likely to be an asteroid or a comet.

John said in a caption alongside his video: “The original purpose of the imaging session was to get this time-lapse, with a happy coincidence of the impact in the second, last capture of the night.”

NASA asteroid expert Paul Chodas told Space.com: “It’s more likely to be an asteroid simply because there are more of them.”

In the end, any collision was avoided although it said there was a ‘chance’ that the asteroid could clash our planet next year when it makes another flyby.

Last month, NASA admitted there was a chance a 100ft-wide rock could have ploughed into our planet.

However, we are glad to report that NASA thinks the odds of a collision on September 28, 2017, are “no more than 1-in-250-million”.

If it did hit the planet, the asteroid would probably explode in the atmosphere, unleashing as much energy as a powerful nuclear bomb and wiping out anything unlucky enough to be beneath it.

Paul added: “The possibilities of collision on any of the three future flyby dates are far too small to be of any real concern.”
