A new bionic eye lens that is currently in development would give humans 3x 20/20 vision, at any age!

An optometrist in British Columbia named Dr. Garth Webb is the person who developed this miracle lens in his pursuit to be able to optimize peoples eyesight regardless of their health or age. He named  the lens the Ocumetics Bionic Lens!

CBC reported the following –  “With this remarkable lens, patients would have perfect vision, ending the need for driving glasses, progressive lenses, and contacts, all of which are set to become a dim memory as the eye-care industry is transformed.

One of the best parts about having this lens surgically inserted is that it will never get cataracts, because this remarkable lens replaces that of the recipient’s natural eye!

According to Dr Webb, the most ideal age to have this lens inserted is 25 and above, because it is believed that the human eye is fully developed by that point.

This is vision enhancement that the world has never seen before, if you can just barely see the clock at 10 feet, when you get the Bionic Lens you can see the clock at 30 feet away.” Dr Webb added.

A custom made lens is folded in a saline-filled syringe and places into the eye, where it takes about 10 seconds for it to unravel into place.

Quick & Painless Surgery

According to Dr Webb, the surgery can be completed within 8 minutes and the results are immediate!

This project is something that has been worked on for the last 8 years, with an expenditure of about $3,000.000. US Dollars in costs, which ranged from research and development fees, to the acquisition of international patents and the securing of a biomedical manufacturing facility in Delta, B.C..

Dr Webb’s mission is fueled by his obsession with being able to free himself and others from having to wear glasses and other undesirable corrective lenses alike. Dr Webb has been wearing glasses since Grade 2.

Dr Webb remarks that his “heroes were cowboys, and cowboys just did not wear glasses

After recently presenting the Ocumetics Bionic Lens to 14 top ophthalmologists in San Diego during a gathering of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Dr Webb’s efforts were finally recognized!

Surgeons from all around the world were intrigued by his “clever” design, Webb says. Here is what Dr. Vincent DeLuise, an ophthalmologist who teaches at both Yale University and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York had to say – “I think this device is going to bring us closer to the holy grail of excellent vision at all ranges — distant, intermediate and near.

Trials & Tribulations

Depending on regulatory processes in various countries, the Ocumetics Bionic Lens could be available in Canada and elsewhere in roughly two years from now, according to Dr Webb. The Ocumetics Bionic Lens is yet to go through clinical trials on animals and then blind human eyes before it can be made available to the public.Dr Garth Webb 1

Dr Webb hopes that his lens will be able to offer a better and more effective option as appose to laser eye surgery, which is still far from being as effective as it could be. He adds that “Perfect eyesight should be a human right.”
