According to reports, on July 11th the United States House of Representatives voted to support an amendment to the 2020 defense authorization bill that requires the Department of Justice to investigate the use of weaponized ticks in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Specifically, the amendment, which was written by Rep. Christopher Smith, demands that the inspector general “shall conduct a review of whether the Department of Defense experimented with ticks and other insects regarding use as a biological weapon between the years of 1950 and 1975.”

Congress has asked to be made aware of any such research and “whether any ticks or insects used in such experiments were released outside of any laboratory by accident or experiment design.”

The move follows years of speculation over whether or not Department of Defense researchers at various facilities had experimented with using diseased ticks as biological weapons.

Some believe that such ticks are responsible for the ongoing spread of Lyme disease.

“We need answers and we need them now,” said Smith.
